moving tips
To help make your next move go smothly, ofollow this handy timeline...

Two months before moving day...
  • Get rid of what you don't want to move. Plan a yard sale...donate it to charity...or just throw it away.
  • Start shopping for a mover...or, if you're a do-it-yourself type, a rental truck. If you're opting for a moving company, decide whether you want to pack yourself, or let the professionals do it for you (an especially good idea if you have a lot of fragile, valuable items).
  • Ensure your insurance situation. Check out your homeowner's insurance to see if your policy covers a move.
  • Prepare your children for a move. Giving your kids time to adjust to the idea of a new home will help make any relocation go more smoothly.
One month before moving day...
  • Start packing. Now's the time to pack up rarely-used china, off-season clothes and other items you don't need right now. Pack each box to capacity; under-filled boxes can easily be crushed, while overloaded boxes can give way, damaging your prized possessions.
  • Save all your last bills so you have the information you need (account numbers, customer service phone numbers) to easily notify utilities, credit card companies, banks and other financial institutions of your change of address.
  • Change all subscriptions to your new address.
  • Get a copy of your family medical records so you can transfer them to a new physician and dentist in your new town.
Two weeks before moving day...
  • Cancel your newspaper subscription... or, notify them of your new address if you're still within their delivery area.
  • Notify all financial accounts including your bank, credit card(s), brokerages and any other companies.
Three days before your move...
  • Disconnect major appliances. Your refrigerator, freezer, washer and dryer, etc. should be disconnected and cleaned out.
  • Finish any last packing.
  • Gather your valuables - jewelry, cash, passport, house deed and other important documents - and plan to carry them with you for safekeeping.
  • Pack a suitcase for each member of your household, including a few days' worth of clothes, toiletries and bedding...along with some dishes and utensils for some first meals in your new home. Just enough to tide you over in those first few days; after all, it takes a few days to UNPACK everything in your new home!
